A speech by the Queen on her 21st Birthday, 1947 for Soprano and Orchestra
As we approach 2026, the centenary of the birth of Queen Elizabeth II, I wanted to document my own feelings about the monarch who stood at the heart and centre of British culture throughout my formative years, and for whom I once hoped I might one day serve in some capacity as a composer. Although that was not to be, this 21st-century Elizabethan composer marks the centenary with a new work.
Intended for live performance in the concert hall, my dramatic scena attempts to bring the audience back to 1947 to witness firsthand the youthful Princess making her dedication to public service on her 21st birthday, with a whole Empire listening.
Below is a demonstration video that gives some impression of the work. Such videos exist to encourage singers, conductors, and orchestras to consider giving the premiere of this work and to bring it to the attention of the public—if possible, in 2026! I’ll update you with news as the forthcoming year progresses.
